July 2021 – WIDE+ joins many civil society organizations in signing an open letter to EU leaders, the EU and UK heads of state and government to share vaccine knowledge and capacity with potential vaccine-producing countries around the world, especially in Africa.
People’s Vaccine Alliance revealed that it would take years to fully vaccinate the populations of low-income countries at the current rate. Less than two percent of Africans are fully vaccinated to date, while 30 EU citizens are vaccinated every second. Through this letter, we convey our dismay at EU leaders’ refusal to countenance sharing vaccine knowledge and capacity with potential vaccine-producing countries around the world, especially in Africa.
Despite overwhelming and growing calls to action, EU and UK leaders continue not to move on this issue and thereby put all our lives at risk. It has been proven time and again that this is the only and best way to ensure the whole world is safe from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The letter outlines 3 key actions, and calls for EU and UK leaders to overcome vaccine hegemony, support manufacturing capacity in other countries and support vaccine delivery in-country. We need to act now and ensure #Vaccines4All. You can take action by signing the letter as well as engaging with EU and UK leaders on social media.
