WIDE+ and Impactmania are launching AIRISE

Women In Development Europe+ (WIDE+) in collaboration with Impactmania are leading the European initiative ‘AIRISE’ focused on promoting transparent and people-centred AI in recruitment, targeting the inclusion of people, especially women and gender diverse folks who face multiple (risks to) discrimination on the labour market.

AIRISE builds on the funded EU Horizon project FINDHR, which discovered that people with characteristics that are protected from discrimination in EU law actually do not experience a decrease in discrimination when companies and institutions use AI in the hiring process. The FINDHR research found that there was a strong consensus on the lack of transparency when AI tools are used by companies. Very seldom do job seekers receive adequate feedback on how the algorithm, together with the human decision maker(s), came to the ranking, particularly in the many cases of rejection.

To effectively minimise discriminatory impacts, AI tools need to be regularly monitored internally by the companies or other hiring institutions and externally by governing bodies such as an equality body in the deployment phase as well. There are major accountability gaps in the use of AI in recruitment, to which very limited transparency in information flowing between companies and job seekers is a major contributing factor.

AIRISE sets out to address the gap in transparent feedback loops between companies and job seekers. WIDE+ and Impactmania are inviting a select group of HR and Talent Acquisition leaders from Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium to join a European Community of Practice on responsible AI in recruitment. Working alongside job seekers from underrepresented groups in the labour market, policymakers, and AI experts, participants will help identify practical solutions for fairer and more transparent hiring.

Are you an HR leader or (recent) job applicant who can meet in person on July 6 in Berlin? Stay tuned for further announcements and join the conversation to help shape the future of responsible AI in hiring.
