Recording available: Sankofa Gathering – Looking Back to Look Forward

Long-time feminist activists, policy advocates and popular educators associated with WIDE+ – and its predecessor Women in Development Europe (WIDE) – recently came together for a Sankofa gathering, a shared space of reflection.

Rooted in the Akan concept of Sankofa – meaning “to retrieve” –  the gathering draws on the idea that we must look back in order to move forward. It invites us to revisit past struggles, knowledge, and collective experiences as a way to shape more just and sustainable futures.

In this first session, held on 24 March 2026, we reflected on over 30 years of feminist engagement with economic justice, macroeconomic policy, and climate justice. Across different contexts and generations, our collaborations – particularly with feminists in the Global South –  have contributed to building a feminist macroeconomic agenda grounded in solidarity, rights, and transformative change.

Through a fishbowl-style dialogue, participants shared key moments, challenges and lessons from collective organizing, including work within networks such as Women’s INternational Coalition for Economic Justice (WICEJ), the International Gender and Trade Network (IGTN), and the Alternative Women-In-Development network (Alt-WID).
