In recent years, the intersection of migration, gender, and human rights has become an increasingly urgent focus of policy debates and humanitarian concerns across Europe. Regimes are growing more securitized, and political rhetoric around migration is becoming increasingly polarized with the chance that the risks faced by displaced individuals, especially women and girls, remain neglected.
This webinar brings together activists and practitioners to unpack the multifaceted realities of migration, human trafficking, and gender today. We will explore the existing policies implemented at the European Union level to contrast trafficking and the risk of sexual exploitation along refugee routes. Especially, we will discuss the blurred lines between migration and trafficking along the Balkan route, with a specific focus on Serbia, and the Mediterranean route. On a positive note, we will highlight stories of resilience, advocacy, and resistance by migrant women. This event was held on 9 June 2025.

Zorana Parezanovic, from NGO Atina. She is a dedicated activist for human and women’s rights, with over a decade of experience providing direct support and long-term assistance to victims of human trafficking and gender-based violence, particularly women and children. In her role as a program coordinator at Atina, she has played a key role in designing and implementing comprehensive social inclusion programs for trafficking survivors.
Erika Oliva, Italian anti-trafficking expert. With a master’s degree in Human Rights and Multi-Level Governance at the University of Padua, she has been working in the anti-trafficking field since before her graduation from different perspectives: from the NGO level in the Piedmont region, to the Department of Equal Opportunities of the Italian Government. She has also been working with the OSCE since 2017 as organizer of the Simulation Trainings that take place each year to train anti-trafficking practitioners.
Jennifer Kamau is a Berlin-based activist and researcher. She co-founded International Women Space, a network of (former) asylum seekers and migrants that promotes solidarity, publishes books, and organizes campaigns and conferences. Kamau serves on the Senate Commission via the UN Decade for People of African Descent. She co-organized When I Came to Germany (2017) and co-led Building a Migrant Justice Community of Practice (2024). Her publications include In Our Own Words: Refugee Women in Germany Tell Their Stories (2015).
Moderated by Erika Piazza, who is a Master’s Degree student of Human Rights and Multi-Level Governance at the University of Padua and intern at WIDE+. She is very interested in migration and human trafficking, on which she wrote her master’s dissertation.
