WIDE+ is a formally registered international non-profit association (INGO) fully complying with Belgian law. The network is independent of political or religious affiliation, and we actively welcome and support members of all sections of society who strive for gender and social justice. WIDE+ vision and mission are part of its constitution.
One of the core strengths of WIDE+ is its scope, activism and diversity of its network. WIDE+ has members in many EU states and its membership is diverse: it encompasses women’s rights organizations, development NGOs, national and regional networks of such organizations, as well as gender specialists, women’s rights advocates and activists. Organizations, networks and individuals contribute directly with their specific strengths to WIDE+ as members.
WIDE+ members work in solidarity with women’s rights organizations in the Global South and other associations in the North, such as grassroots groups or migrant networks. These collaborations feed into the agenda of WIDE+. WIDE+ also manages alliances and strategic partnerships with various other women’s rights coalitions and networks working towards global justice.
|WIDE+ principles of its network|
|WIDE+ aims to work with a good balance among four key principles of its networking:
A) WIDE+ seeks ways to actively involve members and others stakeholders around the globe in its different kinds of activities, creating a participatory, fluid and open network.
B) WIDE+ is governed by its members. This collective will is articulated through democratic, decentralized, inclusive and transparent decision making processes in which members have ownership of the network.
C) WIDE+ is committed to ensure that the mission and vision is a continuous guide in all the work that is carried out.
D) WIDE+ is governed in a way to sustain financial and organizational viability.
WIDE+ governance structure allows for all members to be involved through horizontal participatory democracy. The network is governed by its members. Like many other INGO’s members make up the highest decision making body the General Assembly that meets atleast once a year. Another common feature is the body of the board that is responsible for the financial and administrative management. In addition WIDE+ has a Caucus and Ad Hoc Working Groups included in its constitution.
The Caucus is a formal body of close to 20 members that set out the overall strategic course of the network. This body, that meets mostly via skype and communicate weekly through email, sets and oversees the strategic and programmatic direction.
Ad Hoc Working Groups are mandated to carry forward the work, either implementing specific projects or working around themes; they form the hart of the network which the Caucus coordinates. Members themselves can form a Working Group and receive a mandate from the Caucus. Activists, experts and non-profit associations that are not (yet) member of WIDE+ can actively participate in the Working Group, as long as their beliefs do not clash with WIDE+ vision and mission.
The board supports the association’s way of working, making sure the financial and administrative aspects are correctly managed. There are no fixed offices in the board; chairing and secretarial work is rotated and two boardmembers are mandated for the financial transactions and accounting to reflect the belief that cooperation is possible through more horizontal and collaborative models of working.
